My rat, Algernon, had to be put down this morning.  I found her comatose in her cage, and she was having difficulties breathing as time passed.  We first tried a steroid, but when it was clear her lungs and heart were shutting down, we decided to end her suffering.

I plan on burying her in the garden of my parents' beach house, and making a headstone with the chorus of the song "Flowers for Algernon" from Kathy Mar painted on it:

"If you remember put some flowers on his grave
He was my little friend for all the comfort that he gave
He never called me Dummy he was always on my side
I was so very sorry when he died."

Of course, I'm changing the male pronouns to female for this case.
